Starting January 1, 2026, the Indian government will make it compulsory for all new two-wheelers sold in the country to be equipped with Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS). This major decision aims to improve road safety and reduce accidents involving bikes and scooters.
In addition, dealerships will also be required to provide two BIS-certified helmets with every new two-wheeler purchase – one for the rider and one for the pillion.
What is ABS and Why is it Important?
ABS, or Anti-Lock Braking System, prevents the wheels from locking up during sudden braking. This gives the rider better control over the vehicle, especially on slippery or uneven roads. ABS helps reduce the risk of skidding and serious accidents.
Until now, ABS was only mandatory on bikes with engine capacities above 125cc. But with the new rule, even small-capacity commuter bikes and scooters will need to come fitted with ABS.
How Will This Affect Prices?
This rule is expected to cause a small price hike, especially for entry-level bikes and scooters. Here’s what buyers can expect:
- For vehicles under 125cc, prices may go up by ₹2,000 to ₹6,000 depending on the model and manufacturer.
- For premium bikes already equipped with ABS, there will be little to no change in cost.
- Buyers will now also receive two helmets, which were previously optional and purchased separately.
Which Two-Wheelers Will Be Affected?
This rule affects almost all brands in India, including:
- Hero Splendor, HF Deluxe
- Honda Activa, Shine
- TVS Jupiter, Apache
- Bajaj Platina, Pulsar
- Yamaha Fascino, FZ series
Most of these models currently use CBS (Combined Braking System), especially in the 100–125cc range. These will need to be upgraded to at least single-channel ABS to comply with the rule.
Technical Changes Expected
The shift will mainly involve:
- Replacing CBS with single-channel ABS for budget models.
- Updating braking systems and sensors.
- Slight modifications in wiring and ECU to support ABS.
These upgrades will not only make two-wheelers safer but also bring Indian products in line with global safety standards.
What Buyers Should Know
If you’re planning to buy a new bike or scooter in 2026 or later, here’s what you need to keep in mind:
- All models will have ABS by default.
- Two BIS-certified helmets will be included at the time of purchase.
- Prices may be slightly higher, but the added safety is worth it.
